The mission of my blog is to help couples envision their story through my eyes. Also help them enjoy their wedding day planning with tips and ideas from my experiences as a wedding photographer. - Sarah Kossuch, Rochester MI

HELLO I'm sarah. welcome to MY blog!

sarah kossuch

welcome to

We are approaching the most FAVORITE season of the year for engagement shoots. It’s a great time to post a few things you may not think of or realize when we reschedule engagement shoots.

Fall is OUR FAVORITE time to shoot! And when we have great weather IT IS THE BEST! Because we live in Michigan, we can receive some pretty challenging conditions. It’s important to know we KNOW how much you want your shoot done, and how much time/effort go into planning. We know you need Save The Dates and REALLY want to get them in before the holidays. But, we want it to be PERFECT. Wedding days we can’t control but we CAN control your engagement shoot! It’s important for us to deliver a jaw dropping gorgeous gallery!

Trust us that it’s important when the day comes and the weathers not ideal that we reschedule. With 20+ mph winds, rain, below 30 temps, and pure yuck TRUST ME, it’s not good for anyone. Your hair is all over the place and even on your lips with the cute gloss you have on as you’re trying to pull the strands off.! Everyone has snotty noses (totally being serious here) and you’re downright uncomfortable. And, so are WE! It effects the outcome of your photos which we don’t want.

Wedding days we can’t control which is why winter weddings are generally documented indoors (unless we get an awesome day and we can sneak outside braving the chilly air for a few moments!)

Here are basics we use when rescheduling….

We use the weather channel to keep our eye on conditions. We will make the call 48 hours in advance. If we see anything with more then a 50% chance we’ll make the call. We do not wait until the day of or an hour before your shoot to make this call. This is to be respectful to everyone involved in making this happen (your makeup artist, hair stylist, us and even babysitters!)

We stop shooting portraits November 1st (unless it’s a winter themed one!). November is the beginning phase of winter coming. The temps dip, the colors become pretty dull and we are experiencing crazy winds because of the season changes. It’s important that if you are eager to have a fall engagement session to schedule that ASAP.

We schedule engagements Monday – Thursday evenings because of our weekend weddings!

We do not schedule to photograph inside for a whole shoot during bad weather. Photographing inside somewhere requires permission. Additionally we are natural light wedding photographers, because of that we want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your engagement session!  We love using an indoor space for some of your session but it is not recommended for the entire session.

I considered posting major weather fail photos from engagements but I’ll leave it to your imagination!

I hope this is a helpful tool for couples planning their shoot!

Katherine & Will were married this past May at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township, Michigan. Upon arriving Katherine, her bridesmaids and family surrounded her with nothing but love and excitement! As each family member arrived the whole room filled with joy. I especially enjoyed the moment where her grandparents came to the bridal suite even to rest for a bit, it was very sweet to see their presence for Katherine.

After, Katherine her family and bridesmaids finished getting their makeup on Katherine got dressed with just her mom so that they could have that moment together. Once she finished she had her dad come into the room to do a reveal, and it was so special. Having that time with her mom and Dad is something I don’t think any of them will ever forget.

Katherine had some last minute touches and then had a gift for her parents. You guys, it was so sweet. Tears of joy, happiness and nothing but smiles.

After the gifts it was time to head to the ceremony, I knew Katherine had a form of transportation but was so incredibly pleasantly surprised to see Motorcity Vintage Rentals there! They had a beautiful 1949 PACKARD “HUGO”. Katherine road gracefully with her father by her side to the ceremony location.

We arrived to the church for the ceremony with Katherine full of nerves and excitement. It was filled with nothing but joy and was beautiful in every way.

After the ceremony Katherine and Will had good luck on their day with rain but it didn’t stop the party. We headed back to the venue to photograph them with the gorgeous car before swiftly lining up for their announcement.

After their announcement the rest is history. A great time was had by all and we are so happy to have been apart of their special day documenting their story. We wish Katherine and Will loads of future happiness and continued love and support for each other.

Steele & Blake’s Detroit Opera House Wedding was absolutely hands down incredible! This is such a nice blog because it was unlike any other wedding we’ve documented. The entire theme for their wedding was theatrical. I found out instantly Steele was an absolutely incredible ballerina growing up and it showed. From her pose, to her dancing she was stunningly breathtaking.

Steele was very much in the moment for her wedding and the two things that were important to her (Blake and celebrating) showed! Every moment of the day was just jaw dropping.

After Steele and Blake finished their prepping they decided to have a first look inside the theatre underneath the blue/gold dome. Steele walked up to Blake and before she could tap his should she said “Marco” and he replied with “Polo” and turned around. It was such a fun way for them to see each other for the first time on their wedding day!

The guests arrive and were seated in the theatre for Steele and Blake’s moment. The ceremony began and Steele & Blake married on stage in front of a gorgeous stand with beautiful flowers hanging next to an incredible band playing music. Instantly, and I mean instantly following the service the party started and it started AWESOME. They had an electronic violinist playing during cocktail hour which happened in the lobby area.

One really good component to Steele & Blake’s soiree was that the guests had no idea where the reception was going to take place. Not one person knew! Witnessing the guests having a blast and documenting it during the most incredible music I’ve heard during cocktail hour was truly unforgettable. As cocktail came close to an end Phantom of The Opera’s “The Final Countdown” started to play. Everyone continued to celebrate as usual and then it came…..the lights all shut down. Everyone stops, is confused doesn’t know what’s happening. The lights come back on and flicker….

The guests all come back downstairs by the theatre doors and they suddenly open… the guests all walk in feeling confused then suddenly the curtains rise and just after they rise the Simon Vatale band is on stage in the reception room and started to play music! It was SO INCREDIBLE! Everyone was shocked and BLOWN AWAY! Bravo to everyone involved to make that happen it was truly a sight to see!

Upon walking on stage to the reception Steele and Blake had their first dance to “Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins” and then the night was history filled with laughter, fun, and a WHOLE LOT OF DANCING!

Steel & Blake we were truly blessed to be there to document your day! You love to have a great time and it absolutely shows congratulations to you!

Lauren & Dave’s The Garden Theatre Detroit Wedding was GORGEOUS. We are pretty much obsessed with anything Detroit so finding out Lauren & Dave’s wedding was in the heart of Detroit was no different for us!

We met Lauren at the Westin Book Cadillac for her morning preps as well as Dave at their home in Royal Oak for his. From walking in and our first hello it was a breath of fresh air because you could just feel everyones happiness! Family and friends surrounding Lauren & Dave is something we absolutely LOVE to see and this was a day that was meaningful to everyone around them.

After their final touches we headed to the ceremony which was nothing short of amazing – Dave LIT up the room with his smile when he saw Lauren who was seriously just stunning. Their service was memorable because I remember catching Lauren glance over at Dave and every time she did she would have the biggest smile. When the service completed they exited the church surrounded by friends and family and were ready to celebrate!

Their reception was held at The Garden Theatre which gave us an opportunity to go around Detroit with them and their bridal party! I have to say my favorite is when we went on the top of the Z lot! best place around overlooking the Detroit skyline.

We wrapped up and headed for The Garden Theatre were the two of them danced the night away. I have to say we document at a variety of venues but this one was pretty spectacular! We really love the theatre vibe and it worked SO well for Lauren Dave!

Thank you OH so much for having us there to document your story, it is absolutely beautiful!

Stacey & Ross’s Inn at Bay Harbor Petoskey Michigan Wedding was so insanely beautiful it felt like we were looking out at the caribbean! One of the most picturesque weddings to date!

From getting ready to the first look to the ceremony to the reception they decided to keep their entire day at The inn at Bay Harbor and that was SO perfect! Stacey & her friends not only were getting ready they had such a fun time which was a lot of fun to witness. They even had a cut out head of their friend who was unable to attend which was pretty funny to see ha!

Ross and his friends were in another location prepping for the day and I think it was good for both Stacey and Ross to be with their friend enjoying time before the biggest day of their lives.

After their last finishing touches they headed pout for their first look which was right next to the lake under a tree. Absolutely STUNNING. And Ross’s reaction was so cute you guys. He was BLOWN away by Stacey – that is really the coolest. Ross took his time with her after their moment together.

Directly after we rushed them off for guests to arrive for their ceremony. As guests arrived I think they were all in awe over the stunning view. They were seated and the ceremony began!

Following their ceremony they literally just had a fantastic time. All of the planning is done, the anxiety of seeing each other for the first time was behind them and now it was just the two of them celebrating together!

I am SO incredibly grateful to have been there to document their story it is definitely one I’ll never forget – absolutely stunning!

Allyson & Matts Backyard Novi Chop House Michigan Wedding was SO awesome for us! What made it unique is that Allyson & Matt were very much “in the moment” and THAT is what we LOVE about them. Nothing was really “staged” the entire day was filled with lots of love, laughter, friends and family. These two were circled with an incredible amount of love.

When Allyson arrived she immediately had her first look with Matt. Guys after their first look it was legit love all day. Their story is exactly how it happened and we cannot express enough to them how much that means for us when documenting their story.

They held their ceremony in the backyard which followed with them going on their pontoon boat for celebrating! You guys RULE on so many levels!!

When they finished a little bit of time with the bridal party we headed to the Novi Chop House where they had dinner, and dancing. This was one of the most fun bunch I had such an amazing time with them. THANK you for having us there to tell your story.

Where do I even begin with Lauren & Steven’s Lovett Hall Dearborn Michigan wedding? I’ll start by saying this – they were absolutely hands down amazing to work with during Amanda’s maternity leave. When Lauren + Steven booked us they selected Amanda to document their wedding. They had a GORGEous engagement shoot in Downtown Detroit with her then through the winter one of the happiest moments happened to Amanda, she was expecting! This is sometime with our career we need to be prepared for, life. As luck had it I was still available completely blocked off their day to make sure we were present. When I spoke with Lauren not only was she happy for Amanda she was ecstatic I would be there to document their story. I love Amanda but i’m REALLY happy that I was there. The entire day was, I mean perfect! Not an ounce of worry from either of them and it really reminded us why we love what we do. It truly is couples like Lauren & Steven who make us feel like we are trusted and let us be as creative as we want. I LOVE that!

So we began at the Westin Book Cadillac – I walked in and Lauren’s smile lit up the entire room. Everyone from her family, friends, bridesmaid even the hair and makeup artists filled the room with such good vibes I knew instantly it would be the perfect day. Not long after we departed for their ceremony locations at the Old. St. Mary’s in Detroit where Lauren wanted to have a first look with her Dad. I mean *sigh* guys I can see where Lauren gets her personality from. Her parents were everything anyone would dream of as a Mom and Dad. The emotion her father had seeing her for the first time before walking her down the aisle was just priceless. It’s moments again like this that really are rewarding for us to capture.

The ceremony began, their friends and family all had smiles, tears of joy and nothing but love for the two of them the entire time.

We departed from Old St. Mary’s to Lovett Hall where the bridal party just enjoyed themselves with us prior to the cocktail hour. From laughs, to the funny stories, to just enjoying the day we were able to capture them at their best. It wasn’t long after when the bridal party was announced and went right into speeches. I don’t post much about speeches but I’m going to touch on this one. When Lauren’s dad came up to give his speech it was probably one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. He spoke a lot about Lauren naturally but he brought up something she did a child. He brought up a bird house she made and gave to him. When he finished the story he walked over to his seat pulled out a bag. He put his hand in the bag and pulled out the bird feeder she made and gave him. The entire room was full of tears, even myself. Even NOW typing this. It was honestly one of the coolest things to experience because it wasn’t your typical speech. It was meaningful, loving and very powerful for everyone there.

Following that the night was history with dancing, fun and tons of memories.

Lauren & Steven THANK YOU for having us there to document your special day. It is most certainly one I will never forget and I’m really thankful to have been there in place of Amanda to see your story unfold.

Enjoy a few highlights from their day….

From Minnesota to Michigan, Devan + Page’s Noahs Event Venue Auburn Hills Michigan wedding was every ounce of perfection! From my first hello to wrapping up the night I could feel all of the love in the air.

Devan & Page started at the Embassy Suites in Livonia. I walked in to a happy yet calm room full of bridesmaids, family and Devan who lit up the room with the amount of glow she had! I immediately fell in LOVE with her dress and details. Her SHOES guys they sparkled! My kind of girl =). During our time in the room the bridesmaids would every so often hand Devan a letter written by Page. You guys I’ve never seen anything like that and it was hands down THE CUTEST thing I’ve ever seen. It made Devan glow every time she opened one.

She and Page decided on a first look and neither one of them showed any anxiety it was really calming for everyone around them. Walking up to Page, Devan had a smile from ear to ear and when Page turned around so did he! Their chemistry showed and it was such a cool experience to capture that for them.

From the Embassy Suites we headed to their church, St. Aidan Catholic Church in Livonia. Luckily for us we had a chance to spend a little time with Devan, Page, their friends and family prior to the ceremony. What a beautiful spot we found right behind the church. Seriously, unbelievable! After we spent a little time outside we came back in to hide the bridal party as guests arrived. Devan managed to spend a little quality time with her sweet grandmother. That is something I will say we don’t see a lot and being able to document that moment felt super special for me.

The ceremony began and they could not let down their smiles these two are honestly made for each other and the amount of love they have was apparent. It truly was THE happiest day of their lives.

From the ceremony we headed to the Oakland University campus to capture some time they had with their friends before heading to the reception at Noah’s Event Venue.

Devan + Page, we wish you two the best and had such an incredible time documenting you story!

Kaylee + Taylor’s Hilltop Manor Inn wedding is SO PERFECT!! I cannot tell you how much we dig relaxed weddings and this is such a good example of that. From the house, the love, the laughter, the barn to the fields our hearts were full with this one.

They decided on a first look which was you guys so precious. Taylor had a book with him that he read from and it was the sweetest thing I could’ve witnessed. Kaylee’s smile would not let down and she glowed all day long. Their ceremony shortly after was right outside and the moments beforehand would melt anyones heart. Kaylee’s Dad walked her down the aisle and again this girl was glowing – literally all day. From the ceremony it was one big happy gathering celebrating the two of them. Luckily later on we managed to sneak out into the field during sunset which happen to be some of the favorite images to date!

The whole day was filled with love from friends and family. That coupled with the vibe of the barn outdoor wedding in the summer was just a breath of fresh air.

Kaylee and Taylor truly are one of the sweetest couples around and I’m so incredibly thankful to have been there to document their story.

Where do I begin – you guys Julie and Doug’s Michigan Union Ann Arbor wedding was everything we strive for. The day of their wedding they cared friends, family and each other. And it showed. Julie expressed to us that they just wanted the day documented and we did just that.

Julie & Doug did now want a bridal party as they just wanted the day to surround them. I absolutely LOVE that!

From the moment I walked in and said hello Julie was smiling, happy, and super chill. That’s the epitome of how we love to see our brides. They got ready at the Residence Inn Downtown Ann Arbor which was very nice. Two things stood out to me with Julie’s details, her shoes and her DRESS! You guys, her dress was two pieces. It was super unique and fit her like a glove.

Julie and Doug decided to have a first look in the law quad. This is where Doug attended law school so the meaning behind this area holds a lot of value to the two of them. Doug is a very calm, relaxed person. The moment her turned to see Julie his smile lit up and it was warming for us to see.

From their first look we walked to their ceremony location at Ingalls Mall. They were married outside and as luck would have it, it was just beautiful. It was the perfect summer day for them to exchange their vows.

After the ceremony we took group photos and I love how relaxed it was. No one felt stiff, everyone was happy and just relaxed grouping together to capture their friends and family on their day. We DIG this!

We again walked over to the reception at the Michigan Union and Julie & Doug were ready to celebrate. The evening consisted of cheers, joy, having a good time and a whole lot of dancing!

Thank you so much for allowing us to be apart of your day documenting your beautiful story. It means a lot to us to be able to share with you our view while you enjoy the happiest day of your life.

It’s about more than hiring someone to hold a camera and snap a few pics. Wedding photography is about carefully crafting and capturing the moments of your big day in a way that beautifully tells the story of your love.
